Nut and legume: how important for human health?

Legumes are often associated with cereals in the diet, as these two types of food complement each other from a nutritional point of view. Legumes also provide an important energy supply, being made up mostly of carbohydrates, they are also a source of folic acid, vitamin B1, vitamin H, various minerals including iron, zinc and magnesium, fiber.

In legumes there are three oligosaccharides: raffinose, stachyose and verbascose (in maximum quantities in dried legumes, minimum in beans and fresh peas), which are not digested by enzymes of the gastrointestinal tract and ferment in the bacterial flora of the colon, with a production of gas 3 to 6 times greater than other nutrients.

The aim of this study was to systematically review existing meta-analyzes of observational studies on nut and legume intake and non-communicable diseases, and assess the level of evidence. Out of the six meta-analyzes focussed on legume and 15 on nut intake, a possible association with decreased risk of colorectal adenoma and coronary heart disease was found for higher legume consumption, and a decreased risk of cardiovascular and cancer mortality, colon cancer, hypertension and ischaemic stroke for higher nut consumption.

The association between legume consumption and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), as well as nut consumption and risk of cancer, CVD incidence and all-cause mortality, was deemed as "limited" due to heterogene ity between results and / or potential confounding factors.

General benefit towards better health can be observed for nut and legume consumption. Further studies are needed to better elucidate potential confounding factors."

Iceberg released 152 billion tons of fresh water around South Georgia!

Iceberg A-68a was an iceberg that broke off the Larsen C ice shelf on the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula in July 2017. At the time of its formation, the iceberg weighed more than a trillion tons and was about over 200 m, with an area of ​​over 5800 km².

Furthermore, the A-68a is one of the largest icebergs ever observed, second only, for now, to the B-15 iceberg, which broke away in March 2000 from the Ross barrier, which had an area of ​​about 11,000 km². New research has managed to estimate the amount of water released by the huge glacier, which allegedly flooded the waters around a remote Atlantic island.

According to monitoring systems, icebergs released a staggering 152 billion tons of fresh water around the remote South Georgia island. Scientists are concerned about the massive amount of freshwater being released into the environment, which could affect marine habitats around the island.

According to Anne Braakmann-Folgmann, a glaciologist at the University of Leeds: "This is a large amount of meltwater and the next thing we want to know is whether it has had a positive or negative impact on the ecosystem around South Georgia.

With the passing of days and months, the iceberg has increasingly fragmented and moved away from South Georgia, continuing to move north, so much so that by January 30, 2021, the A-68M fragment was reached.
